News: HDB to install 6,000 digital screens in housing estates

Oct 31, 2019

As part of Singapore’s Smart Nation drive, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) will pilot the roll-out of Digital Display Panels (DDPs) in housing estates from next year, announced the housing board on Wednesday (30 October).

The same day, HDB launched a tender for the installation, operation and management of around 6,000 DDPs.

Currently, several town councils (TCs) have already installed DDPs at various common areas, including lifts and lift lobbies.

“Greater economies of scale”: HDB

“HDB’s pilot roll-out builds on the TCs’ initiative by aggregating demand across different estates for greater economies of scale,” said the HDB press release.

HDB noted that the panels will be installed at lift lobbies on the ground floor and inside some residential lifts, and will feature a rolling display of news and information from community organisers, government agencies and advertisers.

The content would range from local notices on estate happenings to nationwide updates on public health advisories and emergencies.

Commercial advertisements may also be displayed, but they would be capped at 30% of the total screen time.

The digital panels will complement HDB estates’ traditional notice boards, which involve paper notices that offer limited information due to space restrictions.

“With the provision of DDPs, content can be seamlessly refreshed so that residents can be kept updated on important messages as well as the latest happenings within their estates,” said HDB.
